As a reward for consistent positive behaviour since the start of the school year,
nine excellent Year 10 students were taken to TeamSport Karting Edmonton by
Mr Halstead and Mr Tyrrell, as part of the British Schools Karting
Championship. For some of these students, it was their first ever time behind
the wheels of a go-kart, and it was fantastic to see a mixture of both boys and
girls take to the track as part of their initial practice session before a
competitive round in March.

After a track safety briefing, the students donned their race suits, gloves,
balaclavas and helmets before leaving the pits for their first sighting laps.
Despite a few minor bumps and spins, they quickly built up their pace over the
initial 15-minute stint, and all nine were beaming from ear to ear, having
greatly enjoyed their first experience of the 800m track and particularly
enjoying the up and down ramps. After a second 15-minute stint, all students
had become more familiar with the track, and their lap times improved greatly.
One student, who had previously tried karting, said that they were surprised by
how exciting the track was, and the speed that they were able to achieve on
their kart; after taking off his helmet, he admitted, “They really aren’t toys!”
Meanwhile, another student, who had never driven a kart until now, couldn’t
wait to get back on track. By the end of the evening, she said she “had
definitely caught the racing bug,” and was excited to take part in the upcoming
Regional Qualifier.

Mr Halstead and Mr Tyrrell would like to wish all of our drivers the very best of
luck for their first round of competition!
