Cricket 6-a-Side Borough Championships – Year 9 Borough Champions 2023
Back
On Friday 16th June our Year 9 Cricket Team defended their 6-a-side Borough Cricket title at May & Baker Sports Ground, which they won in 2022.
The team: Ibrahim, Aleks, Arunveer, Bassam, Veer, Rayhamn, Ali (Captain), Afroze (Vice-Captain) & Chris.
In the group stage we were drawn against Eastbury and Sydney Russell.
We lost the toss in every game we played but this did not deter the team from showing their class.
In the first game, Afroze scored 27 and Ali Shah 18 after coming in at number 3. We finished on a total of 64 runs in 5 overs, an average of over 12 an over. Sydney Russell managed only 39 runs in reply for the loss of 2 wickets. We won comfortable by 25 runs. Ibrahim was the pick of the bowlers in this game, conceding only 4 runs in his over and taking 1 wicket.
In the second game we played Eastbury and Ali opened the batting and scored 29 runs before knocking the ball onto his own stumps with his pads. Afroze came in at number 3 and scored a quick-fire 18. We finished on 67 runs and with some good bowling again, particularly from Bassam and Rayhan, we kept Eastbury to 41 runs, again winning by a large margin of 26 runs.
In the final we played the winners of the other pool, Jo Richardson School. Again, we lost the toss and they put us into bat again.
This time we were allowed to open the batting with both Afroze and Ali. They destroyed the bowlers from the very first ball, hitting 4 after 4. Both players hit 6 fours in the innings and Ali finished on 32 and Afroze 33. We made 73 runs in the final, which is over 14 runs an over. Some excellent bowling by Ali, Basam, Arunveer, Ibrahim and Afroze meant that after the first over from Ali, Jo Richardson had lost 2 wickets. Chris, our wicket keeper and unsung hero must take a lot of credit for the victory because he stopped so many balls from going to the boundary by getting any part of his body in the way. In the final he made 2 excellent catches behind the stumps to make his performance even better. Jo Richardson could only manage 43 runs in the final, so we won comfortably by over 30 runs to become two-time Borough Cricket 6-a-side Champions.
