We Compose 2024

Back
July 12th 2024

On Monday 1st July students from Years 8 to 10 went to a workshop and performance with the internationally acclaimed string quartet "The Ligeti Quartet". Warren students have been working with a professional composer to create four pieces of music for the quartet exploring musical ideas and representing moods and atmospheres in music. During the workshop students were able to discuss with the quartet exactly how they wanted the ideas performed and consider very technical elements of instrumental performance in order to create the right sound.

The day finished with a performance of all the pieces and it was so impressive to hear student ideas coming to life in the hands of professional musicians. The quartet were also very impressed with the quality of the compositions and said they were amongst the best pieces they had seen in similar projects.

"It was amazing talking to the quartet and seeing them play our piece live"

"I have never seen musicians performing on those instruments before and I liked how they all worked together as a quartet"

"I haven't really composed music before but I now really enjoy it and want to do more. I hope to be in this project again next year".

It was a really inspirational day and we are already seeing the impact of the project in the student compositions in curriculum time which is fantastic as creating your own music is a powerful tool for expressing ourselves and is a really important and lucrative part of the music industry!
